GlobalProtect VPN

New GlobalProtect Service Adds More VPN Capacity

What is a VPN?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a program that allows your computer to act as though it is connected to the internet in a specific location, in this case TCNJ, that then allows you to access specific services that are normally only avalaible on-campus that would otherwise not be available from off-campus locations, such as from home.

To ensure the security of TCNJ networks only operating systems with the latest security updates may utilize the TCNJ VPN service. End of life operating systems like Windows 7, Windows 8 & 8.1, macOS 10.12 (Sierra), macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), and macOS 10.14 (Mojave) which no longer receive security updates are not permitted to connect to VPN

In order to download and connect to the VPN, you will first need to set up DUO Multifactor Authentication using your phone. Please follow the instructions found in this Knowledge Base article on how to set up your DUO account.

For the directions on how to download the VPN, please refer to the instructions attached to the right.

At the present time, VPN is only supported for Windows and Mac OS.

Potential Install Issues

TCNJ Employee Computers:

If you are not an administrator on your TCNJ computer, you may be asked for administrator credentials to allow the install. Please contact the Help Desk if this occurs and they can get the download started.

Mac OS Users:

The latest update for Mac OS requires that you first go to System Preferences and then Security and Privacy to first allow the program to make changes to your computer before it can connect to the server. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to your System Preferences
2. Go to Security & Privacy
3. In the bottom left-hand corner of the Security & Privacy menu, you should see a lock icon, click it and enter your password to unlock it
4. Once the settings are unlocked, you should see a message at the bottom of that window saying that the GlobalProtect program from Palo Alto Networks was trying to make changes to your computer, click the button there to allow that
5. Lock the settings by clicking the lock icon again
6. Go to the "Privacy" tab on the Security and Privacy window
7. Choose "Accessibility" from the left-hand menu
8. There will be a lock icon on this tab as well, unlock this again
9. If you do not see "GlobalProtect" under the programs listed there available for you to check off, click the + icon at the bottom of the menu to open up Finder and then locate the GlobalProtect program under the Applications section to add to the list
10. Lock the settings by clicking the lock icon again

Once you do this, you should be able to click connect on the VPN and get the DUO login window.

Windows Users:

Some Users have reported getting the error "The code execution cannot proceed because mfc120.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem" when they try to install GlobalProtect. To fix this issue, download the Visual C++ 2013 patch from Microsoft located here (you only need to download the vcredist_x64.exe file) and then finish the installation. This may require you to use the GlobalProtect installer file to uninstall the failed attempt first, but this is not usually the case.
