eduroam Wireless Network

What is eduroam?

eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. The College of New Jersey joined the eduroam community in the Fall of 2017 in order to provide this valuable, convenient means of enabling wireless access. eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across their home campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply turning on their device.

eduroam utilizes the IEEE 802.1x network authentication mechanism to provide a secure means of authenticating using your TCNJ username and password. Devices that support 802.1x allow you to configure them to automatically provision and connect to the wireless network without the need to launch a web browser to login each time. When you are within range of an 802.1x network, your device will automatically connect and authenticate without you needing to manually login.

Using eduroam you can access other participating institution networks as easily as accessing the TCNJ wireless network. This is not only convenient, but it will help you save on your cellular data plans.

Most laptops, tablets and smartphones support 802.1x. These include Windows 7/8/10, MacOS, iPad/iPhone, and Android phones & tablets. Devices such as gaming consoles (PS/Xbox/Nintendo), portable gaming devices (PSP/PS Vita/DS/3DS) as well as smart TVs, BluRay players, Roku’s, Amazon and Google home devices do not support 802.1x at this time.

Configuring your device on eduroam

In order to use your device on the eduroam network for the first time (or following a complete update/reset) you will need to configure your device for eduroam on the TCNJ campus. This procedure will ensure the smoothest and most secure configuration experience, and it is highly recommended you do this before travel to another participating eduroam institution.

It is important to note that the configuration steps described here will only work on the TCNJ campus. Any other campus will not have access to the configuration wizard discussed here.

To configure your device:

  1. Open its network preferences.
  2. Select the Welcome-to-TCNJ wireless network.
  3. On many mobile devices, a functionally limited browser, called a captive network assistant, will automatically pop up. If this does not happen, open your preferred web browser and try to navigate to a webpage such as tcnj.edu.
  4. Choose the link under “TCNJ Students and Employees”.
  5. Proceed through the wizard.
  • For Apple and Android devices, see the “Known Issues” section below on this page.

  • Pay attention to the username and password it is asking for. On the eduroam wifi network your login is your username plus “@tcnj.edu”, like your email address.

This is how eduroam determines a user’s home institution. While you will need to provide your TCNJ username and password during the configuration, the wizard may also ask you for your local (computer-only) username and password so that the wizard can make changes to your device such as installing a security certificate or updating your network preferences.

If you have trouble with the configuration wizard, try running it again. There is no harm in running it multiple times. In fact, if you have wireless configuration problems in the future, the first thing you should do is re-run the wizard.

    Known Issues

  • If you accidentally created an account on the guest wireless network, you will not be presented with the initial Students/Employees vs Guest “choice page” again for 24 hours. If you wish to OnBoard to eduroam during that time, visit https://aruba-clearpass.tcnj.edu/guest/welcome.php to go directly to the “choice page”. Choose the link under “TCNJ Students and Employees” and proceed through the OnBoarding process as usual.
  • Apple devices may need to “forget” the Welcome-to-TCNJ network so that the device does not connect to that network automatically in the future.
  • Android devices require special configuration.  See the Configuring XpressConnect on Android Devices page for details.
  • Some versions of the Apple Captive Network Assistant (CNA) are not compatible with the OnBoarding procedure. Specifically, iOS and MacOS devices have some additional instructions to OnBoard to eduroam.

MacOS – When the CNA pops up, the user must choose “Cancel” at the bottom right corner of the screen. Afterwards, open Safari and follow the OnBoarding instructions above on this page.
iOS – When the CNA pops us, the user must choose “Cancel” at the top right of the screen and then choose “Use Without Internet”. Afterwards, open Safari and follow the instructions above.
